Blood Testing: The Missing Link in Health & Fitness November 08, 2017 10:10

Blood Testing: The Missing Link In Health & Fitness.

My Story

If you’re like most people, getting a blood test is probably the last thing you think of when you set out to lose some excess fat, gain muscle or just get healthier. It was most certainly the last thing on my mind when I sat out to transform my body and health several years ago. At 32, I  found myself in the worst shape of my life. Things were hectic both professionally and personally and I failed to make healthy eating and exercise a priority. I woke up one day and set out to make some important changes. My health became the top priority.

Six months into my new habits I hit the habitual plateau and it felt like someone hit the “pause” button. I stopped seeing results from diet and exercise and had constant fatigue. Like most people in the digital age, I turned to Google to figure out what was going on. I stumbled across an article about blood testing and wellness and was immediately intrigued. After a couple hours of research, I devised a list of about 15 blood tests and immediately called my primary care physician to get an appointment. That’s where you go to get blood tests, right?

You should have seen my doctor’s face when I presented my blood test wishlist. After a little debate as to why I was wanting them, he finally agreed to order them. I received a call several weeks later to schedule an appointment to go over the results. After two doctors appointments (and two co-pays), a month of waiting, and fifteen blood tests, the only advice he could give me was. “Everything Looks fine. You certainly aren’t dying.” Well, I was fairly certain I wasn’t going to die but I was looking for a lot more than “looks fine,” especially from a well-known and respected physician. I left frustrated only to get even more frustrated when I received a bill the next week for $2,500 after my insurance had denied the blood tests claiming them as exploratory and unnecessary.

Turns out things weren’t fine. After turning to Dr. Google and talking to a few friends in the nursing profession, I uncovered some pretty serious imbalances that were slowing my progress in the gym and causing significant fatigue. Turns out I was insulin resistant, had hormonal imbalances, was overtraining, had low omega 3 levels, less than optimal vitamin D, and had elevated cortisol levels from adrenal fatigue. While many of the biomarkers fell within the lab’s normal range they were still low or high enough to cause noticeable side effects. Needless to say, after working to optimize my blood results I started looking and feeling like a completely different person.

This personal experience is how the idea for INDUR was conceived. I believe that we all deserve to have access to the tools necessary to understand what’s happening in OUR bodies.  We need to be in the driver’s seat of our health and not let an ineffective healthcare system take control of our health. Doctors are extremely important but far too often they focus on reactively treating problems instead of proactively optimizing health so that problems never occur. It’s how they are trained and how insurance companies allow them to operate. I was having a conversation with a nurse practitioner recently and he indicated that in their practice they won’t order the types of comprehensive panels INDUR offers because they know insurance providers will deny them and the patient will be left with a large bill.

This is why we must take an active role in managing our health.

Guessing: It isn’t effective

The reason that diets and exercise programs fail is that people are guessing. We guess at what might be causing our problems and are guessing at how we should fix them. I can tell you first hand that the guesswork got me nowhere. The analogy of throwing something on the wall and seeing if it sticks comes to mind. I think we can all agree that it’s not how we should manage our health. Once I figured out exactly what my body needed and set out to make very specific changes, I immediately started seeing progress in the mirror and felt as good as I’ve ever felt in my life

You might be curious as to what you could learn from an advanced blood test. Here are some examples of frequently identified issues:

Hormone Imbalances
Many people and medical practitioners still believe that hormone imbalances happen in older people. Wrong. We’re seeing hormone imbalances in people in their late twenties. Imbalanced sex and metabolism hormones can destroy one’s sense of wellbeing.

Chronic Stress
Many of us live a life full of stress. From fatigue, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, weakened immune systems, muscle catabolism, and insomnia, stress is a leading contributor to health issues.

Insulin Resistance
Sadly, the majority of people have issues with blood sugar and insulin. Diets full of sugar and refined carbs can be blamed. Issues with insulin can read havoc on our health and make a six-pack virtually impossible.

Leptin Resistance
Leptin is the master hormone. It’s our body’s natural stop sign when it comes to eating. It’s supposed to signal our brain to not eat when there are adequate fat cells to produce energy.  Leptin plays a huge role in weight management.

You don’t build muscle in the gym, you break it down. Building muscle happens as we recover. Finding a happy balance of training and recovery is instrumental for getting results.

Dieting and exercising without the insight obtained from a specialized blood test is like dragging a car behind you. You can walk, but the progress will be VERY VERY tiring and slow.

INDUR Blood Testing

Indur’s testing platform gives people access to the testing services necessary to understand their body. We’ve created specific panels to help people reach specific goals. An athlete or fitness enthusiast can learn how to increase strength and endurance with our Perform Panel, whereas someone seeking to lose significant weight and gain muscle would benefit from our transform panel

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting information that you don’t know what to do with.  Don’t worry, Indur IQ, our analytics platform, gives customized lifestyle, activity, nutrition, and supplementation recommendations to help you optimize your levels.

If you’re not happy with your progress or if you’re looking for a more scientific and effective approach to getting healthy and fit you should consider getting your blood tested

Stop Guessing When it Comes to Your Health November 08, 2017 10:08

Stop Guessing When It Comes To Your Health

With the uncertainty of the current health system, the time is now to become more proactive when it comes to taking control of our health. It’s time to place a larger emphasis on improving and maintaining health habits from the inside out. Fortunately, preventative and personalized wellness is gaining more and more traction these days. Why? Well, millennials, that’s why.

We’ve grown up in a healthcare system focused solely on managing symptoms, rather than identifying the underlying cause and treating it accordingly. Physicians are not solely to blame for this disservice to our health; it’s unrealistic to think that, in the timespan of a visit, a doctor can effectively offer a complete check-up on a patient, extensively research his/her ailment and provide a true remedy for the underlying cause, while bearing in mind the patient’s unique circumstances, hormone levels, allergies, age, lifestyle, and the list goes on. So the vicious cycle continues of misdiagnoses, symptom management, and a less healthy society overall. The healthcare system is funneling money into alleviating symptoms, versus true preventative care. At least that’s how it’s been for the last several decades, but millennials aren’t having it.

Millennials have shown an increased interest in understanding and improving their overall health and fitness. Generations past have sought medical care when needed and worked to live healthy lifestyles. This new wave doesn’t want to wait until they’re sick. They want to start taking care of their bodies now, to look and feel their very best. Many see this time as an opportunity to find alternative ways to maintain a healthy body and minimize doctor visits.

It’s commendable that millennials are more proactive and do their research to live a healthier lifestyle by adjusting their diet and fitness habits. However, the guessing game is still in effect. People are seeing what worked for their friends, family and coworkers and think, “They got results, I will too.” Maybe a diet a friend went on helped them drop 20 pounds, or a new workout supplement showed marked gains in muscle mass; it doesn’t mean that it will have the same effect on everyone. We need insight that allows us to make the changes relevant to our own individual bodies and lifestyles. Only then will we experience real and sustainable results in our health, fitness, appearance and overall well-being.

To eliminate the guesswork and assumption that “one size fits all” when it comes to diet, exercise and supplements, companies need to get to know their customer on a personal level. It starts from within, to learn what’s going on with one’s body. Some people take a quiz about how they’re feeling and within days receive vitamin packets designed specifically to keep them feeling great and staving off ailments. Others are starting to realize the accessibility of easy and inexpensive medical laboratory services that offer direct access to diagnostic blood testing to objectively know what is going on inside their body and match them with supplements and wellness products. This is exactly what I did.

I was misdiagnosed by several well-respected doctors after seeking help for a variety of health issues I was experiencing. The doctors insisted that was nothing wrong, but I was in the worst shape of my life and on the verge of becoming a diabetic. I took my health into my own hands, invested the money to get a blood panel done, and finally learned what it would take to solve my vitamin deficiencies, hormone imbalances and insulin resistance issues, all remedied within three months. Not only that, I was able to get in the best shape of my life after intentionally optimizing specific biomarkers that were causing fat and making it hard for me to gain muscle.

When it comes to your health, you need answers. Removing the guesswork puts you on a fast track toward results. It’s your responsibility to seek solutions, outside of the doctor’s office, make changes and track your progress. There are resources out there that enable you to track and stay on top of your health and fitness. Taking care of your body has cascading effects, not only with your physical shape, but your mood, self-esteem and even your sex life.

Though not all created equal, there are an increasing number of programs and platforms dedicated to helping you find the right plan for you and you only. While millennials are on the forefront of this rising trend, we know preventative healthcare is beneficial to us all and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes the true norm.

How to Use CBD Oil [Infographic] November 07, 2017 15:00

If you or someone that you know struggles with arthritis, insomnia, or other ailments, CBD Oil could be the perfect cure.

Recently, we launched a line of products that incorporate CBD Oil (Cannabidiol), which is a non-psychotic cannabinoid from the cannabis plant. This line includes:

1. Oil

2. Lotion

3. Drinkable Shots

We've created the below infographic detailing some of the benefits and ways to use CBD Oil. Learn why and how to incorporate these products into your life or your loved ones who may benefit from them.

GuideLive.com: "Dallas juice shop sells hemp 'edibles' like brownies and smoothies ... but you won't get high " October 03, 2017 11:09

This article was originally posted on the GuideLive.com. Thanks so much to author Jeremy Hallock covering this new offering from Roots.

Businesses in Texas can't legally sell marijuana, not for medicinal purposes and not for fun. But one company in Dallas, Roots Juices, is selling "edibles" made with cannabidiol, which comes from the cannabis plant.

Hang on a minute: These are not the same "edibles" you can buy in Denver. Roots Juices' version — which are sold as gluten-free brownies and strawberry muffins — are infused with cannabidiol hemp oil, commonly known as CBD oil or simply CBD. It's hemp without the high.

Whereas marijuana products are derived from plants with high concentrations of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is extracted from low-THC hemp and is a non-psychotropic, which means you will not have an otherworldly experience, or a chill moment on the couch, if you eat one of Roots' brownies.

After selling CBD products for a few months, Roots owner Brent Rodgers says there has been virtually no controversy.

"There's a few people who won't go near it," he says. "But I don't think they understand the product."

Rodgers says CBD items are so popular that he is adding cake balls and lollipops "in about two weeks." The company, which has two shops in Dallas and two in Atlanta, also sells smoothies and shots that contain CBD. The shop even sells bottles of CBD oil; Rodgers says capsules are coming soon.

He believes CBD is a natural fit for shops with juice blends meant to hydrate, energize and cleanse. "We juice a lot of turmeric and life-changing, very strange ingredients and herbs," Rodgers says. Expanding the shop's offerings to CBD products "just made sense," he says.

He takes CBD every day to treat insomnia. Customers have told him it offers relief from anxiety, depression and joint pain; some give it to their children to help control seizures.

Dr. Jane Sadler, a family medicine physician on staff at Baylor Medical Center at Garland, says she has patients who use CBD oil. Studies have demonstrated health benefits, she says.

CBD "may reduce anxiety, help fight cancer, decrease symptoms of schizophrenia, and even improve social recognition with people who suffer from Alzheimer's Disease," she says. But Sadler encourages people to check in with medical providers because "there is no regulation on CBD oil, and it needs to be developed and approved by the FDA."

Is this legal?

The legal status of CBD is murky. The Food and Drugs Administration has not approved CBD products "for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of any disease." The Drug Enforcement Administration says CBD "falls within the Controlled Substances Act definition of marijuana" and Texas' policy is still progressing.

But Rodgers insists that selling CBD oil is federally legal because it is below the legal threshold for THC percentage in hemp (0.3 percent or less). Several business owners across the country have also subscribed to this assumption and quickly created a thriving industry with hundreds of CBD products, from massage oils to dog treats.

So, how does it make you feel?

Curious about the effects and benefits of CBD, I visited Roots Juices on Oak Lawn Avenue. It was early afternoon and a self-described "powerlifter who enjoys rock climbing" was buying a shot of cold brew coffee that contained CBD oil. She regularly buys CBD shots and says they help with back pain and post-workout recovery.

I drank a CBD smoothie loaded with greens and, for good measure, ate a brownie.

The CBD had no discernible taste or smell, and in minutes I felt something, but certainly not high. With no pain or exercise to recover from, I noticed the anxiety from too many cups of coffee disappear and started to feel more relaxed. The effects were subtle, but positive, and seemed to wear off after a few hours.

As we've reported in the past, Texas is getting ready for when legal weed becomes a local industry. Marijuana is coming to Texas, our Tiney Ricciardi wrote in May. For now, those in the fitness community seem to be finding Roots Juices' hemp edibles as a sliver of what's to come.

I Live In Dallas: "28 Days of Roots Juices" October 03, 2017 10:45

This article was originally posted on the blog "I Live In Dallas." Thanks so much to Neil for documenting his journey of juice cleansing with Roots.

This is the first of three articles I plan to write in order to share my juicing fast journey with you. As with all good anecdotes, I will try and relay this account in an as personal and specific way as possible. I will make it personal because by its very nature it is personal. I will make this account specific for quasi-scientific reasons so it can be duplicated if others choose to do so on his/her path to health.

I will be unpacking this true account of a better, healthier, life in three articles with the last being the final reveal and visual results. You see, with the exception of two meals, I haven't eaten solid food in the past 28 days. I have been surviving (and thriving) off of the cold pressed juices extracted and sold by Dallas-founded Roots Pressed Juices.

At this point in the process I feel surreal. I look and feel better, have more energy, am enjoying sharper clarity of mind, and more hopeful about the future than I have been in years. In 28 days, this journey has changed my life, and it's not over yet. This juice fast has put me on a completely new healthier and balanced trajectory.

General Practitioner's Prognosis

A little more than thirty days ago, I went to see a general practitioner for a preventative annual check-up (my day job offers a yearly monetary incentive for doing so). I didn't actually have a general practitioner in Dallas that I thought of as "my doctor," even though I've lived here for twelve years. That reveals to you how often I actually visit a doctor other than emergencies or wisdom teeth extraction.

Unfortunately, my health and diet had always taken a backseat to my career ambitions, insatiable love of food, culture, fun, and variety-seeking. I found an in-network GP in Southlake with excellent online reviews. He asked the reason for my visit of which there were three.

1. General check-up for company $ incentive

2. An odd, unidentifiable, rash on my back (had been there a year)

3. Was about to go on a 30 day minimum juice fast with his blessing

As expected, the doctor told me that I had to do something as far as diet and exercise or I would I have go on cholesterol-lowering medication in less than three months. My vitals were bad. I have the report sent to me via email that I will share a screenshot of in my second article so you can see a before and after comparison.

    The Texan Diet

I had the normal Texan diet -  ground beef tacos, enchiladas, chicken fried steak, fillet steak, lots of barbecue brisket, boiled shrimp, fried and blackened catfish, daily doses of Coca-Cola, and three-to-four natural sugar-packed cups of coffee a day.

According to the clinic's scales, I could see that I weighed more than I've ever weighed in my life. I was fat. This wasn't an opinion; it was a body mass index (BMI) fact. I will embarrassingly reveal exactly how fat I was with before and after photos in the next article.

    Sugar Addiction

On top of being fat I was addicted to sugar. This manifested itself through highs and lows throughout the day, and crashing at night, which I had come to believe as just "normal." I quit sugar-laden sodas and coffee cold turkey. The difference between how I felt a little more than 30 days ago and how I feel now is vast.

    How Did This Happen?

After seven years of writing about food festivals, Dallas restaurant openings, the State Fair of Texas, and other sensory-centered events, plus eight hours a day sitting in front of a computer for my day job for the last 12 years, it all took a toll.

I've never been what one might call "athletic," but was skinny as a rail as a teenager and was considered "fit" by most arbitrary measures for most of my 20s. The photo to the left of this article was taken three years ago. I typically suck-in for photos. I have to admit I became what you might call "skinny-fat." This is where all fat just goes to the gut, chest, pectorals (moobs). The legs, arms, butt, and thighs don't increase that much. This type of fat placement is more common among men, it seems.

I started writing about food and festivals in my late 20s. Now I'm 36. I know all the clichés about lower metabolism when one hits their 30s and 40s, but I decided a long time ago that wasn't going to be me. I wasn't going to let that be an excuse. I wasn't going to be a portly 40-something year-old pot-belled, mostly bald with pony tail, goatee-donning guy driving a leased BMW around Uptown. Yet, here I was on that road.

    Four Failed Fasts

In 2012, I watched the documentary Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. This doc had a profound effect on me. It was a released in 2011, written, directed, and centered around Australian business man Joe Cross. Joe had an autoimmune disease at the beginning of the film, weighed 310 lbs, and needed a change. The film chronicles Joe's personal mission to regain his health through a 60 day juice fast and road trip across the United States. He ends up losing more than 80 pounds over 60 days and his autoimmune disease healed itself.

    10 Day Fast

In 2013, I went on two five day juice cleanses in a row via Roots Juices. They were a relatively new company in Dallas and the only one that I knew of that offered cold pressed juices in the form of a regimented cleanse. However, I cheated. I learned later on that the body has to come to a faux starvation state in order for it to dip into fat reserves for energy before weight loss can start. It doesn't happen if you alternate juice and food. Most of our energy is received though daily in-take of carbs, sugar, and other fast energy consumables, but when those are removed your body moves to the pantry.

    DIY Second Try

In 2015, my girlfriend and I tried juicing on our own. We did it successfully for around two weeks. We might have lost three or four pounds max. In this trial I learned that there is a huge difference between juicing with a cold press (masticating) juicer versus juicing with a run of the mill blender or centrifuge juicer. Cold press juicers extract 40 - 50 times more nutrients and a lot more juice. A NutriBullet® doesn't do the job.

    Intermittent and Water Fasting

YouTube is riff with stories of intermittent and water fasting. If you aren't familiar, intermittent fasting is eating all you want, but only during a small window of time. Basically, it's consuming just one meal a day at a certain time to get your body used to using the energy more efficiently. Water fasting is only drinking filtered water and consuming no actual food or juice. Needless to say, these are two tough options for those with less than optimal self-control or someone that gets invited to restaurant openings and festivals. Under stress, they were downright impossible for me. I failed at both.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel - Roots Juices 30 Day Fast

The light at the end of the tunnel came when I contacted Roots Juices and struck a deal for a 30 day juice Roots Juicesfast for myself and my girlfriend. Full disclosure, it was not free or even close to it because of my publisher status. I did get a discount, but it wasn't any sort of discount they haven't given on special occasions. We combined it with their Labor Day special and paid for two 30 days fasts upfront. Cold press juicing is not inexpensive for the business owner, or customer. However, it works! It's one of the fastest, most efficient ways to lose weight without being miserable or even hungry.

With a cold pressed juice cleanse, you not only lose weight, you turn your whole health profile around. We did alternate juices with Topo Chico Mineral Water, which is approved and is one of the only other liquid products Roots sells that isn't made in-house.

Roots Juices Founder Brent Rodgers is a true Dallas entrepreneurial success story. When I did my original 10 day cleanse in 2013, their only location was on Oak Lawn. Now they have a second store in Lakewood, and two more stores in Atlanta, Georgia.

More Details & What to Expect

Their prices are extremely fair when you consider that every 16 ounce bottle has up to three pounds of fruits and vegetables that have been extracted. Their plans or "cleanses" are setup as Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. One can stay on Level 1 indefinitely, if he/she choses, or move onto the others in sequence. They typically get more green and spicy the higher you go.

You drink six bottles a day, which equates to 18 lbs of fruits and vegetables. Would you be able to physically eat 18 lbs of fruits and veggies in one day? I wouldn't, but I have been drinking 18 lbs worth of juice every day for 28 days. They offer 1 day, 2 day, 3 day, and 5 day cleanses.

The 30 day fast (or ten 3 day cleanses, however you want to look at it), is off the menu. Since it's extremely fresh, it's best if consumed within five to seven days, but even better within three. This keeps the optimal amount of nutrients in-tact. Each of the six juices had a day are consumed in a beneficial sequence, with sort of special dessert juice at the end of Level 1 and Level 2 ("Health Nut" made from almond milk).

I will get into a lot more detail in my second article where I will recommend some insider juice fasting tips that helped me get through 28 days and my favorite juices. The reason I am not spilling my beans here with my results is I have decided to go another 17 days! That's right it will be 45 days in all. Plus I have to make another trip to the MD. He's going to flip when he sees the improvement in my chart.

    What's Next

In my next article I will reveal my before and after photos, share a video so you can get a better look, show my new cholesterol levels, vitals, tell you what happened to that rash I had the doctor look at, and more.

    Juicing and Cancer September 20, 2017 11:21

Can Juicing Help You Fight Back Against Cancer?

Countless studies show that a high intake of fresh produce, including both vegetables, and fruit, can help you to reduce your risk of chronic diseases like cancer. The more natural, colorful, and plant-based your diet becomes, the more healthy and vibrant you feel. The easiest way to improve your consumption of disease fighting fruits and vegetables, is with a natural juicing habit.

Freshly made juices that you can create for yourself at home, are fantastic sources of nutrition, designed to help you rejuvenate and heal your body from the inside out. With the right juicing recipes, you can accomplish a range of incredible things, from losing excess fat, to battling cancer. All you need is the right juicer, and a little bit of creativity to instantly enhance your wellness.

The Benefits of Juicing for Cancer Patients

There are plenty of incredible benefits that come with getting your regular dose of nutrients and vitamins from a glass of juice. Not only can you absorb the enzymes your body needs faster with juicing, but you also subject your stomach to much less work, which can be particularly important for patients undergoing cancer treatment, who might suffer from nausea.

Cancer patients can get more nutrients from a home-made juice than they can from a standard meal, because they bypass the digestive process entirely - something that's particularly important during a period of healing. What's more, vegetable juices are particularly good sources of phytonutrients and antioxidants, which can protect the cells of the body from things like injury, pollution, and disease.

Freshly-made juices are considered to be powerful health elixirs by a lot of people suffering with cancer, and they can help to ensure that your body gets all the extra help that it needs to heal if you're already fighting back against this life-altering condition.

Here are a few cancer-fighting juices to get you started.

    1.    The Antioxidant Brew

If you're trying to clear your system of toxins and give your body a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals at the same time, then this could be the perfect juice for you. Remember to take it easy when you're sipping on this juice, as the taste of kale can be a little much for people who are not used to drinking their vegetables. This juice is rich in antioxidants like quercetin, and can fight back against the inflammation commonly associated with cancer. You'll need:

    • Half an inch of ginger
    • Half a lemon
    • 1 apple
    • 2 cups of kale

    2.    The Mineral Master

If you're in the middle of a particularly intense cancer treatment and you're struggling to keep down much of the vitamins and minerals that you need for good healing, then this could be the perfect juice to get you back on track. The spinach contains folate, and iron to help improve heart function and circulation, while the antioxidants like mangiferin help to fight back against disease. You will need the following:

    • 2 cups of spinach
    • 1 cup of pineapple
    • 1 medium mango

    3.    The Nausea Buster

Sickness and nausea are a common side effect for cancer sufferers. The treatment that you have to go through, plus the illness itself, can mean that you spend a lot of time in the bathroom, and not much time stocking up on the nutrients you need to heal. Fortunately, this brew might be able to help, with its rich contents of calcium, potassium, folic acid, magnesium, and vitamins, A, C, and B! It even comes with ginger to help settle your aching stomach. You'll need:

    • Half an inch of ginger
    • 4 Romaine leaves
    • 1 kiwi
    • 1 stalk of celery

    4.    The Re-Hydrator

Finally, frequently throwing up can leave you feeling dehydrated and overwhelmed. The following juice is perfect for rehydrating your system, and getting the electrolytes, you need back into your blood stream. It comes packed with beta-carotene which is great for improving the performance of the immune system, as well as potassium for hydration. You'll also find a healthy dose of antioxidants, along with vitamin B and C in your Romaine leaves. Sip slowly to get the most out of this delightful mixture. You will need:

    • 4 romaine leaves
    • 1 cucumber
    • 1 cup of honeydew melon

    Juicing on a Vegan Diet August 04, 2017 10:02

Juicing on a Vegan Diet: Tips and Recipes to Get You Started

These days, juicing is a popular trend that most people have heard of. Not only is it a great way to get more nutrients and vitamins into your system, but it's also a commonly-commended remedy for rejuvenation, detoxification, and healing. After all, with juice, you're providing your gut with a simple and easily-absorbable source of crucial minerals.

Whether you're searching for juice solutions for weight loss, or you're simply trying to improve overall health and wellness, there are countless ways that you can incorporate juice into a vegan diet. Doing so could not only help you to banish unwanted pounds, but it could also help with everything from stomach discomforts, to inflammation, low energy levels, and more. Think of it like taking a daily liquid supplement!

How to Make Vegan Juicing Easy and Affordable

One important thing to note about juicing, is that although it might be trendy, it can also be pretty expensive. The good news, is that there are many ways that you can reduce the cost and complexity of juicing. After all, you don't have to buy the most expensive ingredients, or juice every day to reap the benefits of a more produce-rich diet. Try some of the following tips:

    1. Use ingredients that are rich in water

As wonderful as kale is, you're not going to get much juice from it when you throw it into a blender. On the other hand, if you mix that kale with cucumber and apples, then you could end up with something far more substantial. On top of that, using water-rich foods ensures that you'll stay well-hydrated throughout the day, which is crucial for good health.

    1. Buy ingredients that last

Carrots, romaine, ginger, lemons, celery, green apples, and a host of other produce are great for lasting a very long time in your refrigerator. These are all some of the best ingredients you can use for juicing - and they're also very tasty too. Getting long-lasting produce means that you won't have to worry about rushing to stock up your preserves.

    1. Use more vegetables than fruits

Fruits can offer many great health benefits, but they're also expensive for juicing. Usually, it's better to eat fruit than drink fruit juice, because that way you can get more of the fiber out of the fruit skins. On top of that, juices that are rich in vegetables can reduce the amount of natural sugar that you expose your body to. This means that you get more of the benefits, without the unnecessary weight gain.

    1. Make only what you need

A common misconception in the juicing world is that you need to make huge amounts for the process to be worth it. However, all you need to do is make as much as you need each morning. If you only have four ounces a day, instead of eight, you'll still feel great. Additionally, cutting down on the amount you drink will ensure that you keep your supply around for longer.

    1. Use fewer ingredients

Though some of the best juices do use a lot of different fruits and vegetables, you don't always need ten ingredients per glass. Sticking to three or four can also be just as good, and a little can go a long way. Remember to keep a nice ratio of acidic flavors to sweet, for the best outcomes.

    Choosing Vegan Juicing Recipes

Once you know how to get the most out of your juicing practices, you'll be ready to try out some delicious vegan juicing recipes. There are plenty of wonderful options out there that can serve not only to brighten up your day, but detox your body, and banish a range of common ailments too. As with most things, you'll find the more you experiment, the more varied your diet becomes.

Here are five of my favorite vegan juices:

    1. Orange Sun Rise

    • Four carrots
    • Thumb-size amount of ginger
    • Spinach (about a handful)

Juice your carrots and ginger, then add the spinach for a delightful morning juice.

    1. Simple strawberry juice

    • Cup of soymilk
    • Cup of orange juice
    • 1 cup of strawberries

Perfect for people who love a touch of creaminess with a sweet afternoon drink.

    1. Mango and Spinach blend

    • 2 cups of spinach
    • 1 large mango
    • 1 large banana
    • 1 cup of water

Blend your spinach and water until you have a frothy mixture, then juice it all with the mango and banana.

    1. The Breakfast Juice

    • 2 carrots
    • 1 grapefruit
    • 1 mango

Blend everything together and juice for a thin consistency. This a sweet and refreshing way to start your day.

    1. The Herby Juice

    • 1 Mango
    • 2 Carrots
    • 1 Banana
    • 6 leaves of basil
    • Ice
    • 1 cup of soy milk

The perfect juice for any time of day, full of unique flavors and texture.

    Cancer & Juicing March 01, 2017 10:57

I have the opportunity to help many patients going through chemo. Here is my recent letter to a new customer:

I’m so happy you reached out to me. I have had the opportunity to help many patients with cancer and those going through chemo.

My goal with a chemo patient is to build up the immune system as high as possible, making treatments much easier on the body. I often start before chemo is administered in most patients helping with immunotherapy (now a primary course of treatment at many hospitals)

I agree with you on the lower fruit content juices being better for chemo patients. Any alkaline juice, those being very high in root based vegetables are going to perform better for the body and you will see optimal results. These are your carrot, beet, celery, ginger based juices. I try to stay away from the citrus juices as they are acidic.

What we have recently learned about the PH of the body and juicing is that when your body is in an alkaline state disease can not grow and thrive. Your body pH affects everything. Research has proven that disease can not survive in an alkaline state, and that viruses, bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, candida, and cancer cells thrive in acidic, low pH environment.

With this being said my hope is to help build up the immune system for our cancer patients that we service, while potentially helping to shrink cancer cells. Though this research hasn’t been proven.

The only fall back with chemo patients is that often have a heavy sensitivity to cold while they are undergoing treatment. This can sometimes make it painful to drink juices.

In this case we often look at pure shots of ginger and turmeric.

My recommendation starting out would be to try to do 6 juices a day, I would recommend the Green Goddess(kale, apple, spinach, romaine, cucumber, celery), Go Green (kale, spinach romaine, lemon, celery, spinach), Liver Cleanse(beets, carrots, apple, aloe, ginger), Wake up(carrot, apple, ginger, watermelon), Greenology(parsley, cucumber, kale, pear, lemon). I would also recommend doing a shot of turmeric /ginger daily. While turmeric is new to treating cancer it is currently in 16 clinical trials around the country and is also a root based vegetable that has many healing properties.

I’m happy to bring by some samples for you to try at your convenience or I’m happy to host you in store to go over more details.

Please note our juices and the juices I recommend for chemo patients are not the tastiest things in the world. Unfortunately since they are loaded with veggies they are often an acquired taste so depending on your diet you may have trouble with some.

It takes about 1-2 weeks to start to see and feel the full effects of juicing but when you do begin to feel results you will be able to bounce back from treatment very quickly and be able to sustain a very high immune system.

Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions and let me know what we can do to service you.

Dandelion Lemon Ginger and Turmeric February 21, 2017 15:11

Dandelion root (this is the worst tasting one)  has a natural diuretic effect, allowing your liver to more quickly eliminate toxins. It also helps strengthen the immune system, balance blood sugar levels, relieve heartburn and soothe digestive issues.

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. Turmeric has recently been proven to prevent Alzheimers and dementia.  This study was published in the fall of 2016 by the British Journal of Medicine.

Additionally, turmeric is being used in 16 clinical trials around the country for treatment of colorectal cancer.

The health benefits of lemons are due to its many nourishing elements like vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, niacin thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus and protein. Lemons contain more potassium than apple or grapes.  The biggest benefit of lemon is the acid interacts with various enzymes in your body and stimulates the secretion of gastric juice-reducing bloating.

Ginger root is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion and is used for wind, colic, irritable bowel, loss of appetite, chills, cold, flu, poor circulation, menstrual cramps, dyspepsia (bloating, heartburn, flatulence), indigestion and gastrointestinal problems such as gas and stomach cramps. More importantly  It is a warming remedy, ideal for boosting the circulation, lowering high blood pressure and keeping the blood thin in higher doses. Ginger is anti-viral and anti-bacterial and makes a warming cold and flu remedy.

Sorry tried to be brief. Here are a couple of pictures of the shots lined up.  Most people take them in store but we can do them to go like we do for you.

How Cold Press Juices Differ From the Rest September 09, 2015 17:08 163 Comments

Here at Roots Juices we prefer our own style of making cold pressed juices. The explanation behind our specialty is the efficiency and quality in which we produce the best product for our customers. In today’s world, many people are looking for ways to be healthier and we want to give our customers the best formula, and best results, for the best life possible.

Completing a juice cleanse or adding juices into your current lifestyle can be a rewarding experience. However, there are some major differences why our cold pressed juicer is a miracle machine compared to the more common centrifugal juicer.

Our product is freshly produced every day using cold pressed juicers or what are also known as masticating juicers. First, the machine crushes the fruit and vegetables like a garbage disposal and then high pressure turns the contents into a blend of tasty juice. The juice is immediately bottled up, stored in the refrigerator and ready to consume. It’s that simple!

A centrifugal juicer requires a fast-spinning metal blade that produces heat when it separates contents to form the juice. Why does this make a difference? When heat is applied less nutrients are retained for the final product. Our cold pressed juicer uses a minimal amount of heat which in turn leaves more vitamins, minerals and enzymes into each juice.

Other perks to using our cold pressed juicer over alternatives include the ability to process nuts to make our almond milk and the capability to process leafy greens more efficiently. Our cold pressed juicer gives us more versatility to keep expanding our juice menu. Roots Juices wants our customers to understand how our juices ensure a healthier product and a healthier you!

Try our juices today and see what all the hype is about! Order before 1p.m. and your juice will be ready for pickup or delivery the same day.

Juicing for Health: Ingredients Make the Difference September 09, 2015 17:07 5 Comments

Compared to other methods, juicing for health can be very unique. The juice cleansing process works in multiple ways. By drinking the juices your body absorbs the nutrients, minerals and enzymes. You might ask yourself why is this important? In order to live a healthy life our human bodies require these components. Each of our twenty-three different ingredients we use to make the juices can have a positive effect on your health. As previously mentioned in an earlier blog many of our ingredients are even known to help fight cancer.

These same ingredients can help prevent other common health issues as well. Citrus fruits like limes are high in Vitamin C and limonene which may help prevent breast cancer. One speciality of Roots Juices is that because of the juice press we use, we’re able to use almonds in our juices. Almonds provide many health benefits that include easing the effects of heart disease, diabetes and anemia. Trying a juice cleanse may be the remedy you’ve been looking for!

Whether or not juicing is better for your health than eating the whole fruit or vegetable itself is up for debate. According to the Mayo Clinic, supporters of juicing say your body can absorb nutrients better and it gives your digestive system a break from the fiber found in pulp. If you’re worried about the effects of a juicing cleanse, it’s always better to ask a doctor if it’s the best thing for you. We want our customers to feel comfortable about trying our products.

Although there are many reasons for someone to begin a juicing for health, there is one universal important thing to remember, research the health benefits of the ingredients used to understand what’s best for you. Every combination Roots Juices offers can be specifically cater to an individual’s needs.

Try one of our juice cleanses, we’d love to be part of helping you achieve a healthier you!

What Makes Roots Juices So Different? June 30, 2015 11:43 4 Comments

Have you met Brent? Well, let us introduce you to the founder of Roots Juices. This finance guy turned world adventurer spent an entire year traveling the world in search of something beyond the status quo. The result? A passion for community and juicing plus a collection of ridiculously awesome juice combinations.

So many fresh, organic flavors, so many questions. Why is Roots Juices so unlike the other juice bars around? How exactly is the juice made?

Two clues: 18,000 pounds of pressure and a lot of fresh produce.

Maybe you’re already a Roots Juices devotee or just thinking of giving it a try. Step into Brent’s “office” and get a behind-the-scenes look at his entire process.

    New to Juicing? May 16, 2015 06:12 3 Comments

New to juicing? Juicing has been used for years and it is easy to find people who claim to be healed of cancer by drinking fresh raw juice everyday. Juicing is the foundation of some alternative cancer curing protocols.

Selecting a juicer is the first step! There are many juicers available on the market today but not all of them are appropriate. The two types of juicers recommended are masticating juicers or grind and press juicers which Roots Juices use. These are also the most expensive to buy, cheaper juicers are centrifugal juicers and the blades whirl at such rates of speed that the juicer heats up and kills vital enzymes.

THE POINT OF JUICING IS TO FILL THE BODY WITH LIVING ENZYMES! For this, Juicers like the Champion and Norwalk work the best! The type of produce used also makes a big difference. Fruits and vegetables must be ORGANIC. Fruits should be used sparingly, for drinking large quantities of fruit juice is not recommended since fruits contain a large amount of natural sugars. Assembling, juicing and cleaning equipment is a lot of work. Best results are achieved when the body receives a constant supply of living nutrients from fresh juice to heal itself. Juicing alone isn’t enough for cancer treatment. The entire diet should be cleaned up and harmful habits such as cigarettes and booze should be stopped. While juicing for cancer, one may choose to consume only fresh living each day or add other wholesome foods to their diet. It goes without saying that other foods consumed should also be organic and free from chemical additives. A huge plus from juicing is that the digestive organs can rest due to the lack of work caused by consuming solid food, in which case solid food should be limited. As always, it is best to seek a physicians opinion before starting a juice diet. Nutritional needs need to be met so that your body may continue to run effectively. In most cases, juicing works well with a traditional treatment. Juicing overall is a lifestyle that every person seeking great physical health should consider adding into there everyday routine.

Master Cleanse vs. Juice Cleanse May 16, 2015 06:11

We get may clients that come to us and say “I’ve completed the master cleanse, now I think I’m ready to try your cleanse!” Honestly, sometimes this rubs us the wrong way. We started this company not to compete with the traditional fad cleanses and diets that have come and gone, but to show Dallas that cleansing can be healthy and beneficial in the long run. Essentially, our cleanses are the original; humans have been drinking fruit and vegetable juice for thousands of years. It is healthy, nutritious, detoxifying, and cleansing. All without sacrificing much of anything! Personally, I like to think of our detox & cleanse kit as more of a “cleansing nutrient flush” rather than the definition that is commonly associated with the word ‘cleanse’.

What’s wrong with the master cleanse concept? We welcome you to research this yourself, there are plenty of articles arguing for both sides of this topic. Our founder – Brent Rodgers, has always been against these types of cleanses. As you may know this cleanse consists of just water, a little lemon, and some processed maple syrup. People end up starving themselves for two weeks – forcing their bodies to pull energy from lean muscle mass before the fat. And as soon as the cleanse is completed they fall back on all the same unhealthy habits and ruin any progress that they’ve made.

Check out an article about the Master Cleanse on health.com

So what’s better – A juice cleanse or the master cleanse? A juice cleanse floods your cells with nutrients. It provides your body with all of the “good stuff” that it needs to thrive and heal itself. We welcome you to educate yourself and make your own decision! And we are always available to chat with you!

5 Creative Ways to Get Your Spinach May 16, 2015 06:11

    The Many Benefits of Spinach

This leafy green is a super-versatile nutrient powerhouse. And thanks to these easy ideas, you have no excuse to leave it out of your next dish.

Popeye, it turns out, was onto something.

While wolfing down a can of spinach might not give you insta-muscles or superhuman strength, eating two or three servings of this nutrient-rich leafy green each week could help you power up in other ways. Some preliminary research shows it might make your muscles more efficient during a workout (cool, huh?). Plus, it has a load of other nutrients that keep all systems running smoothly:

It’s full of lutein, which promotes healthy eyesight by preventing cataracts and macular degeneration.
One cup of fresh spinach provides almost 200 percent of the daily value of vitamin K, which is essential for bone health.

Spinach contains twice the amount of iron as most other greens and can act as a substitute for men who are not eating as much meat, according to New York City nutritionist Stephanie Middleberg, R.D. (Getting enough iron, among other things, will keep your energy levels up.)

But perhaps the best thing about spinach is this: It’s extremely versatile, so you can keep it on hand and toss it into any meal. Here are five super-simple recipes to get you started.

Fresh loose-leaf bundles are the healthiest, but you can also prepare this easy side dish with frozen or packaged spinach. Just heat 2 tbsp. olive oil and sautée spinach over high heat for two to three minutes. For extra flavor, add your favorite seasonings, like one clove of garlic (minced) or 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper. Tip: Cook up two bundles of spinach, since the leaves shrink.
The green color may throw you off, but trust us, this green drink is not as bitter as it sounds. To make one 16-ounce smoothie, you will need 1 cup of water, 1 cup of baby spinach, 1 banana, and 3 to 4 ice cubes. (You can also add 1 cup of plain yogurt or some protein powder to give it a muscle-building boost.) Throw all of the ingredients in a blender and drink up for an easy snack.
Next time you find yourself staring into a frying pan, try this unique spinach-egg combo: Sautée spinach in 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat until it wilts, which should take about five minutes. Then, form nests in the spinach before cracking an egg in each. Cover and cook for four minutes, until the egg whites are set. Garnish with Parmesan cheese or a dash of hot sauce.
Perhaps the easiest way to add this leafy green to your diet is by swapping it in for iceberg lettuce next time you make a salad. Feel free to go nuts and add your favorite ingredients, but for a surefire recipe, try tossing walnuts, a sliced apple or pear, goat cheese, and currants. Mix 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil for the dressing.
Finally, cakes you can eat without reversing your workout. (Bonus: These Parmesan Spinach bites don’t just taste good—they are also perfectly portioned.) So start by throwing 12 ounces of fresh spinach into a food processor until finely chopped, then toss it in a medium bowl with ½ cup of low-fat cottage cheese, ½ cup of shredded Parmesan, 2 large eggs, 1 clove of minced garlic, ¼ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of ground pepper. Stir until combined. Pour mixture into a greased muffin tin (it should fill about 8 individual cups). Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Sprinkle on a little more Parmesan and serve warm.

Detox During Breakfast, With Food! May 16, 2015 06:10

Sometimes nights out lead to mornings filled with dietary regret. If that’s the case, then you’ll want to help undo the bad with a healthful breakfast made with detoxifying foods. With chilly mornings a near certainty for the next few months, a breakfast that warms you while helping you get off to a good start is in order, so here’s a warming detox breakfast to make the next time you feel bloated and blah from the night before.

Oatmeal with fresh fruit: Whole grains help regulate your digestive tract, a major key in a detoxifying diet. Choose a bowl of natural, plain oatmeal — not the prepackaged sugary kind — and add slices of apple or another fruit. Fresh fruit contains high levels of antioxidants and fiber, which help flush toxins from your body. Get more healthful oatmeal recipes here.

Green tea with lemon: Green tea contains high levels of catechins, which speed up liver activity and promote the production of detoxifying enzymes. Add a squeeze of lemon for an alkalizing kick.

Ginger green juice: Need extra detoxifying help? Whip up this spicy green juice; while it’s served cold, the addition of ginger to the simple recipe warms your body, and the lemon, ginger, and parsley in the juice all help your body detox. Make this in the morning, and take it along with you to work in a mason jar for a midmorning pick-me-up.

Try a Green Juice Cleanse to help Revamp Your Beauty Regimen May 16, 2015 06:10

Great tips for boosting your health and appearance in 2013!

Tip #2: A green juice cleanse

Tired of looking at celebrities and wondering how on earth they manage to have such a youthful appearance — despite their heavy work schedules? Well, wonder no more because we’ve found five ways to make 2013 your year.

    1. Start Cleansing

Ever wonder how celebrities such as Angelina Jolie or Kim Kardashian have such flawless skin? Although everyone can’t afford to get those pricey microdermabrasion treatments from spas, we have found the next best solution. On a daily basis, women wear makeup and eventually it leads to a lot of build-up on the face. This build-up can damage the skin by causing breakouts or dry skin. The Clarisonic helps to remove dirt, oil and left-over makeup from pores without using any harmful chemicals. In fact, unlike other cleansers the Clarisonic can be used twice a day and can help improve your skin texture within a matter of days.

    2. Juice It

One of the most popular resolutions made every year would be to be healthy and have a healthy diet. Although many prefer fruit smoothies, green smoothies are often more beneficial to the human body. There are numerous reasons to include them in your diet; not only are they very easy to make, but they are also highly nutritious. Green smoothies are full of vitamins, iron, protein, fiber and antioxidants. Also, by having a green smoothie bright and early in the morning, your body is given the nutrition that it needs — and within a matter of time it will return to its overnight detoxification and slimming mode which takes place during the early morning

2 pressed juices a day helps to lose belly fat May 16, 2015 06:09

I’m not sure at what point I began to get fat. It was sometime in living in sunny Southern California. Where everyone is beautiful and it seems that no one works and everyone has a lot of money. How was I living in West Hollywood around the most beautiful people in the world and gaining weight. I was exercising, eating healthy, active, but depressed. Part of it could have been my dead end job or just overall unhappiness in my life. I later found our the primary reason I was stacking on the belly fat was because of my lack of digestion. Even when eating healthy I was always bloated and always had a stomach ache. I was sensitive to EVERYTHING!

As it turns out I had no enzymes left in my body. My body was no longer breaking down food the way it used to so instead of digesting it my body stored it in a muffin top around my ass and my waist. I went from a size 32 to a size 36, YES THIRTY FREAKING SIX WAIST! UGHHHHH. Nothing would fit around me.

I remember waking up one night with horrible stomach pains and drawing the line saying that is it . I WILL FINALLY DO SOMETHING about my stomach issues. So I got online in the middle of the night and read about enzymes. The importance of enzymes in digestion . I immediately started juicing, and pressed juicing to be exact because of the many many enzymes that help break down food. Within 2 weeks my waist started slimming and my stomach aches were completely GONE! Yes Gone Here I am 8 months later. I drink 2 juices a day. I have lost 25 lbs and have more energy than I have ever had in my life. I feel great and my body is the fittest it has ever been.

Sure pressed juices have been known to cure cancer and help people lose weight during a fast but I think we are just on the cusp of something so great, so cutting edge, that could vastly change our physical bodies as we now know them. I’ll post some before and after pictures. One year ago and today!

How Stress Messes With Your Stomach May 16, 2015 06:08

The enteric nervous system, or the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, is often referred to as the “second brain.” That’s because much like your brain, the GI tract relies on the same types of neurons and neurotransmitters to complete specific functions, as well as maintain communication with the central nervous system. Have you ever noticed that fluctuations in your emotions cause a reaction in your stomach? You may feel butterflies with love, nausea with anxiety, or gut-wrenched with fear. This is because the brain has a direct effect on the GI system.

This also means that when you’re experiencing stress—whether chronic stress or ongoing tension from small daily stressors—your gastrointestinal health is impacted. Psychological stress can impair contraction of the GI tract, induce inflammation, and increase susceptibility to infection.

The GI tract/brain connection is so intense, in fact, that research has shown that patients who seek therapy for stress and mental anxiety see a reduction in GI symptoms. The reverse has also been shown: Changes to your diet, such as eliminating certain foods, can improve your mood and energy levels.

    Is it stress?
Chronic upset stomach, irritable bowels, and other unpleasant symptoms of the digestive system are the gut’s natural reaction to stress. To minimize the damage to your mental and physical health, you need to identify the source of your discomfort and when it began.

Then, try these strategies for reducing stress:

    • Meditation. Try quiet meditation exercises, join a yoga class, or simply find a quiet time and space to unwind. Be sure to take quiet time for yourself on a weekly basis.
    • Journal. Sometimes you just need a space to “let it all out.” The pages of a diary can be a great way to rid yourself of stress and free your mind and body from what’s bothering you.
    • Make a list. Sometimes managing stress is as simple as writing down and prioritizing what needs to be done.
    • Therapy. Talking to a trusted advisor or professional counselor can help ease stress.

    Is it diet?
If the stress in your life seems to be under control, yet you still suffer from moodiness, feelings of anxiety, or lack of energy, it may be related to food sensitivities. Food sensitivities are different from food allergies, in that the reaction isn’t as severe and often doesn’t manifest itself for up to three days. Processed foods, gluten, dairy, peanuts, alcohol, soy, sugar, and artificial sweeteners are the top culprits of GI discomfort and diet-related mental anguish.

To determine the source of your GI distress and related symptoms, try an elimination diet. Develop a healthy eating plan that eliminates food items over the course of three to four weeks. This should sufficiently rid your body of the harmful effects each food may be having on your GI tract.

After the 21 to 28 day period, start adding back each food item one at a time, watching for discrepancies in your mental and physical state. Reactions may include—but aren’t limited to—mental fogginess, fatigue, depression, abdominal cramping, upset stomach, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or acne. If effects aren’t observed after one week, the added food item is a safe part of your intake, and you should choose the next food on the list to add back to your diet. If effects are observed, cut that item out of your regular dining rotation.

Once you’ve finished the elimination diet, you can devise a balanced diet eliminating the foods that cause you distress. Removing these foods from your diet will enhance your energy, improve weight management, boost mental clarity, and may even help you sleep.
